Chapter 12

Part II — The Investor's Workshop: Method, Valuation and Risk

Chapter 12

Your own process and portfolio plan

All the lessons in one system: portfolio layers, a decision journal, rebalancing and your own ‘investor's charter’. Time for champagne — well earned.

For eleven chapters, we have been gathering tools. Now we need to put them on the right shelves. Because a process is not a list of good advice — it is a system that also works on a bad day, when you are tired after a night shift.

Portfolio layers

Worked example

An example of portfolio architecture

Emergency fund
6 months of expenses — outside the market
Core (broad-market ETFs)
75–85% of capital
Satellites (selected stocks)
10–20% of capital
CryptoPark
up to 5% of capital

This is an example of a structure, not a recommendation of proportions. Your layers depend on your age, goals and tolerance for risk.

Decision journal

Write down every decision before acting on it: what you are buying, why, how much you could lose, when you will exit. After three months, come back and compare. The journal shows not whether you were lucky, but whether your process works.

Well then, Bart? When are we opening the champagne?

Bart

When the plan works the way I designed it. Not before.

Dirk

Let me know when it does. I'll bring glasses from the canteen.

Nothing ventured, no champagne drunk. But take risks without a plan, and you usually pay for someone else's.
