11Part II — The Investor's Workshop: Method, Valuation and Risk
Chapter 11
Saifedean Ammous: The Bitcoin Standard under the microscope and the architecture of CryptoPark
Hard money, time preference and a critical look at Ammous's arguments. How to build CryptoPark — a separate area of your portfolio with its own rules.
The Bitcoin Standard by Saifedean Ammous is a book that changed the way many people think about money. Its central argument: money whose supply cannot be increased at will rewards saving and long-term thinking.
What is worth taking from it
- The concept of time preference — the willingness to give up pleasure today for greater value tomorrow.
- Awareness that inflation is a form of quiet tax on savings.
- An understanding of the difference between hard and soft money.
Where to keep a critical distance
Ammous writes as a committed supporter. Bitcoin can be extremely volatile — historically, it has suffered falls of 70–80%. Regulation, technology and market psychology can change. The argument may be right, yet your position may still be too large.
The architecture of CryptoPark
CryptoPark is a separate part of your portfolio, like an area in a warehouse marked out with yellow tape. It has its own limit, its own principles and its own rule book. What happens in the park stays in the park.
- Fence — a maximum portfolio share set in advance (e.g. 5%).
- Foundation — most of the park in the most established assets.
- Experimental zone — a small part for learning, accepting that it could go to zero.
- Rule book — no leverage, custody of your own keys, rebalancing once a year.
Worked example
CryptoPark's asymmetry
- Total portfolio
- 20,000 €
- CryptoPark (5%)
- 1,000 €
- −80% scenario
- −800 € = −4% of the portfolio
- +300% scenario
- +3,000 € = +15% of the portfolio
The fence makes the worst-case scenario painful, but not devastating.

What if Bitcoin goes up tenfold? I'll regret only having 5%.

And if it drops 80%, you'll be glad you only had 5%. Choose which you can live with more easily.
